Superintendan Kanan polis Filipina, Ruben Cariaga memberitahu AP, Ahad lalu, bahawa penculik menelefon isteri Rodwell sebelum Krismas menuntut wang tebusan awal sebanyak AS$23,000 (RM72,174).

– AP

  1. Under Australian law, the survivors and families of victims of overseas attacks can claim compensation. But for that to happen, Prime Minister Tony Abbott would have to declare his kidnapping a terrorist event.

Despite an official from the Attorney-General's Department (AGD) lauding his courage and referring a petition from him to Mr Abbott's office, the kidnapping victim is sceptical it will see action. The AGD did not place any timeframe on when he should expect Mr Abbott to decide on his case. ASIO has officially declared Abu Sayyaf as a terrorist organisation.

A Filipino police officer has been arrested over the 2011 kidnapping-for-ransom of Australian Warren Rodwell.
According to news.com.au, the detained policeman Jun Malban, is the cousin of one of the nation's top Islamic militants and Filipino terror group, Abu Sayyaf leader, Khair Mundos. Mr Rodwell was held for 472 days in the jungle and was finally released in March 2013, after his family managed to raise a significant ransom and has spent time since recovering from his physical and psychological injuries.
Senior Superintendent Roberto Fajardo from the national police anti-kidnapping unit told news.com.au that Mr Malban was detained in Malaysia earlier this month after fleeing when he was charged. He has since been deported back to the Philippines.
It is believed by Spt Fajardo that Mr Malban was in cahoots with Mr Rodwell's captors. Mr Rodwell's abductors pretended to be police officers when they kidnapped him in 2011 and demanded $2.5 million for his release. Although he was released over a year later for a ransom payment of over $120,000, this payment had never been acknowledged by the Australian government.
Mr Malban's cousin, Khair Mundos was arrested in Manila in June 2014, after having a $600,000 reward for his capture on his head. Police in the Philippines have linked the terror group, Abu Sayyaf with Mr Rodwell's kidnapping.
The former ADF soldier lost around 30kg during his time in captivity and dropped to a body weight of 55kg, living in constant fear of being beheaded by the terror group.
Doctors told him upon his return to Australia in March 2013 that he likely would only have held out three to six months more in captivity eating small meals.
He had to have his right index finger amputated last September because of damage caused when his abductors shot him in the hand.

He is now living in Brisbane and has spent extensive time with doctors, psychologists and physiotherapists. Mr Rodwell spent time in a wheelchair when he returned from the Phillippines because his legs were so atrophied from a lack of use.
