France's Sarkozy vows to intensify strikes in Libya Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:07 AM PDT PARIS (Reuters) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy promised Libyan rebel leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil on Wednesday that France would intensify air strikes on Muammar Gaddafi's army, the president's office said in a statement. It gave no detail on how the strikes would be ramped up.
Following talks at the Elysee Palace, his first meeting with the French president, Abdel Jalil told reporters he had invited Sarkozy to visit the eastern rebel-held city of Benghazi. He also said the rebel opposition pledged to try and build a democracy in Libya where the head of state would come to power "by the ballot box, not atop a tank". France to send military liaison officers to Libya Posted: 20 Apr 2011 05:05 AM PDT PARIS (Reuters) - France will send military liaison officers to Libya to support opposition rebels that are locked in a conflict with Muammar Gaddafi's army, government spokesman Francois Baroin said on Wednesday. "There will be a small number of liaison officers (placed) with the national transition council in order to organise the protection of the civilian population," Baroin told a news briefing, stressing that there was still no intention of sending foreign troops into the North African country. He said the number of French liaison officers would be in single digits.
